私は今年１月から、アメリカはカリフォルニア州にあるサンフランシスコ州立大学（ＳＦＳＵ）に留学しています。現在は前期が終わりに近づき、期末試験も終えて、学生たちが卒業式や夏休みへと浮足立っている様子です。私もようやく生活が落ち着いてきたので、今回は、サンフランシスコ・ＳＦＳＵとはどんなところなのか、こちらでどんなクラスを受講しているのか、どんな人におすすめの大学かなどをお話していきたいと思います。
観光地としては、海外ドラマ『フルハウス』でもおなじみの朱色の鉄橋ゴールデンブリッジなどが有名ですが、サンフランシスコの町の魅力は、一つの町のなかで多種多様な文化を見ることができるところでしょう。たくさんの美術館があり歴史を感じる一方で、Twitterなどの大企業がひしめくＩＴの町でもあります。また、特に中国、そして日本からの移民が多いせいか、中心部にはアメリカ最大のチャイナタウンや、日本町もあります。春には桜祭りも行われ、神輿や和太鼓さらには阿波踊りのパレード、そしてアニメなどの日本文化をもつグッズの市場も並びました。さらに、サンフランシスコは「ゲイの聖地」とも言われ、特に一部の地域は町中にＬＧＢＴの象徴であるレインボーフラッグが並び、カップルなどとすれ違うこともよくあります。
このように、様々な特徴がある地域が、すべて電車で回れる圏内にあるので、一つの町の中でたくさんの顔を見ることができるのが一番の魅力です。

ＳＦＳＵはとても大きな大学で、学生数は福島大学の１.５倍、留学生数もとても多いです。もちろん、日本人留学生も多いので、キャンパス内を歩いていれば、三日に１回くらいは日本語が聞こえてきます（笑）。日本語から完全に隔絶された生活をもとめるのであれば、少々自分自身で工夫する必要があるかもしれません。
ただ、たくさんの生徒がいれば、それだけ多様な文化を持つ人たちと出会えるチャンスができるということです。また、24時間空いている図書館や、去年できたばかりのジムもＳＦＳＵの学生であれば無料で利用することができます。福島生まれ福島育ち、福島大学で４年間を過ごしてきた私にとって、このような大きな大学での一人暮らしはとても刺激的で、良い経験だと感じています。

In this topic, I'd like to explain about the difference of academic system between Japanese and SFSU. The exchange students (at least J-1) are required to take at least 12 units per a semester. And the average of units in a class is about 2-3. You probably assume like, "Oh, do students take only 4 classes in a week? That's so envious." Well, the idea is totally wrong. Most of classes, especially basic classes, have 2 lectures on a week. Even if you just take 4 classes which have 2 lectures, you have to join 8 lectures as total every week. Of course, this is not easy work.
Also, I found another difference in American university. Whenever we register the class in Japan, double-booking was really annoying problem for us. However, such cases are rare here because university doesn't have certain time schedule. Every class has own duration and own schedule. Further, professor sometimes offer online class, too. We can basically have lectures using laptop anytime we want, so we don't have to head to the certain classroom on time.
In this semester, I take 2 English classes and 3 theater classes (including 1 online class). The average duration of English classes is about 60 min, but an activity class in my major lasts for 3 hours. Depending on the class, the duration differs a lot, so you can organize your schedule more flexible not only on campus but outside of campus.
Has your impression about sfsu changed? I hope that would be positive. There are many attractive points in both of San Francisco and sfsu. I believe the experience here should be unforgettable one for anyone. The Finals are coming in a few weeks. I'd like to do my best as the overall of my first semester.
