私は2022年の9月中旬に来日し、すぐに日本のとりこになりました。人々、場所、そして何より食べ物、ここにあるすべてが私にとって魅力的で興味深いものです。そこで、これまでほとんど福島に滞在していた私は、クリスマス休暇を利用して、日本を旅することにしました。旅は、休暇の初日である12月24日に始まりました。日本でも大きな都市で、最も興味深い場所の一つである大阪へ行くために、私は小さなバッグに荷物を詰めて旅立ちました。日本のほとんどの電車は時間通りに運行していますが、もちろん新幹線も定刻通りに発車しました。私は座席に座って、暖かい朝日に照らされた美しい福島市を窓から眺めていました。この時は11日間という短い旅で、福島が恋しくなるとは思いもしませんでした。新幹線がゆっくりと加速し、私の旅が始まった時、雪が降っていました。窓の外に広がる日本の雪景色をぼんやりと眺めながら、私の好きな季節の冬に日本に来る夢が叶ったこと、雪に覆われた山や神社を見たり、日本の友人とスキーに行ったり、美味しいトンカツラーメンを食べて、一日の疲れを癒したりすることを考えていました。
5時間後に大阪に着いた時、雪はありませんでした。気温は暖かく、駅には今回一緒に旅する友人とその家族が迎えに来てくれていました。私たちは安くて手軽なカレーを食べに行き、お腹を満たしました。これから4日間、私たちは大阪で様々なことをする予定です。初日は、ショッピングモールに行き、ホテルにチェックインした後、大阪の真ん中にある小さな居酒屋で彼女の両親の友人とクリスマスディナーに参加しました。2日目は、彼女が初めて大阪に滞在した時にできた友達に会いに行きました。大阪の中心部を歩き、動物カフェで食事をし、ショッピングモールで買い物をし、映画館で一日を終えました。3日目は、また別の友人のお母さんの家にお邪魔しました。コーヒーと紅茶を飲み、私はホストファミリーの子供たちと日本のカードゲームで遊びました。その日の食事はこれは私がこれまで経験した中で最も興味深い夕食の体験となった。私は想像を超えるようなワイルドなものを試すことができたのです。刺身や唐揚げに始まり、ウニや牡蠣といった面白いもの、さらには白子やサメの軟骨といった聞いたこともないようなものまで、様々なものを食べることができました。最終日には、大阪城と姫路城に行きました。日本の城を訪れたのは初めてでしたが、その壮大さと美しさに驚かされました。姫路城の内部を見たり登ったりして、その歴史を読み、色とりどりの庭を散歩しました。姫路城は間違いなく私の大阪滞在のハイライトでしたが、翌日はバスで日本の反対側にある小さな都市、鳥取市に向かう予定でした。
鳥取市は日本の北海岸に位置し、海辺にある天然の砂丘で最も有名です。ヨーロッパ出身の私は、砂はビーチでしか見たことがありませんでした。生まれて初めて砂丘を見たときの私の顔を想像してみてください。砂丘は想像以上に大きく、登るのも大変でした。その日は小雨が降っていたので、砂は少し固くなっていました。しかし、私と彼女は鳥取で一番高い砂丘の頂上にたどり着き、周りを見渡すと、美しい風景と海、そして遠くに鳥取の小さな町が見えました。これを読んでいる皆さんへ。もし、鳥取に来る機会があれば、迷わずここに来てください。そして、時間を見つけて多くの博物館を訪れてみてください。
この旅で最後に訪れたのは、日本最西端の都市である下関です。短い滞在でしたが、とても素晴らしい場所でした。下関の神社を巡り、一番大きな海峡ゆめタワーに登り、大きなショッピングモールでは4ヶ月ぶりにステーキを食べました。下関は、たった3日間ではとても回りきれませんでした。なごり惜しいのですが、帰らなくてはなりません。私は新幹線に乗り込み、福島に戻りました。こうして私のクリスマスの旅は終わりました。
福島に帰ってきてから、友人と私は、市内のいろいろなレストランを試してみることにしました。食事に出かけるたびに、街を歩きながら、目についたレストランをランダムに選んでいました。そうすることで、驚くほど安い値段で素晴らしい料理が食べられる場所をいくつか見つけることができました。また、様々な味を体験し、日本の食の世界を探求する機会にもなっています。
福島は、今まで行った日本の他の場所と比べると、間違いなく一番美味しい食べ物を持っています。 私たちのお気に入りは、街の真ん中にある小さな隠れ家的な通りにある小さなラーメン屋さんです。今まで食べた中で一番おいしいラーメンが食べられるだけでなく、店主もとても親切なんです。店主は一人でラーメン屋を切り盛りしているおじいちゃん。私たちが店に入るのを見たとき、彼は本当に嬉しそうだった。英語で話しかけられたのですが、日本語も話せますよと言うと、さらに大喜びでした。そこの餃子もとても美味しくて安い。今まで福島で行ったお店は数え切れないほどですが、どのお店も美味しかったです。行ってみて楽しくなかった店、美味しくなかった店は一軒もない。福島は本当に日本一食べ物が美味しいところだと思います。
留学先をどの大学にするか決める前に、いくつかの大学について調べました。福島大学は、スポーツクラブやスポーツ教室の数が多いので、すぐに私の目に留まりました。私はいつも剣道や弓道などの日本のスポーツをやってみたいと思っていました。福島大学は、新しいスポーツに挑戦し、人々と出会い、日本語を練習するのに最適な場所だと思い、志願することにしました。ありがたいことに、私は入学を許可されました。今、一学期を過ごしてみて、ここは本当に不思議なところだと思います。山の上で日本語を勉強し、様々な人と様々なスポーツをすることは、私にとって本当に願いが叶ったようなものです。まだ剣道も弓道もできていませんが、来学期には必ず挑戦したいと思います。私はまだ、バレーボール部とソフトボール教室にしか参加していません。しかし、どちらも素晴らしいものでした。たくさんの人と出会い、日本語を練習し、楽しいスポーツをすることができました。もし、日本でスポーツをすることに興味があれば、絶対に福島大学に来てください。それだけの価値があります。

I came to Japan in the middle of September 2022 and fell in love with it immediately.
Everything here including the people, the places and most importantly the food is fascinating and interesting to me. So, after only having stayed in Fukushima for most of my time so far, I decided to take a trip across Japan during Christmas-Vacation. The Journey started on the 24th of December, which was the first day of Vacation.
I packed my rather small bag to take the Shinkansen all the way to Osaka, one of the biggest and certainly one of most interesting cities here in Japan. The Shinkansen was of course on Time like most trains in Japan are. I sat down in my seat and gazed upon the beautiful City of Fukushima trough my window as it was slowly lit up by the warm morning sun. What I did not know then, was that I would come to miss Fukushima in my short Trip of only 11 days, especially the Ramen. It was snowing when the Shinkansen slowly accelerated, and I began my journey.
On my way to Osaka, I often found myself staring out the window into the snow-covered landscape of Japan, even when it blurred by so fast. It has always been my dream to come to Japan during winter as it is my favourite season. To see the mountains, shrines and homes covered in snow, to go skiing with my Japanese friends and warm yourself up after a hard-working day by eating a delicious bowl of Tonkatsu-Ramen.
As I arrived in Osaka 5 hours later however, there was no Snow. It was rather warm as I got picked up from Osaka-Station by my girlfriend and her family who would be accompanying me on this trip. We went to eat some cheap and simple Curry to gather our strength for the day.
We would be spending the next 4 days in Osaka doing various things.
The first day, we started by going to a shopping mall, checking into our hotel and after that attending a Christmas Dinner with the friends of my girlfriend's parents in a small Izakaya in the middle of Osaka.
The second day my girlfriend and I went to meet some of her friends she made during her first stay in Osaka. We walked trough the central area of Osaka, eating at an animal café, going shopping at the mall, and ending the day by going to the cinema.
The third day we visited yet another friend of my girlfriend's mother at her home. We drank coffee and Tea and I got to play Japanese card games with the hostess's kids. After that we went out to eat which would become the most interesting Dinner experiences I have ever had. I got to try the wildest things I could imagine. From simple things like Sashimi and Karaage, to more interesting things like Sea-Urchin and Oysters, up to stuff I have never even heard of like fish-sperm and edible Shark-bones.
The last day we took a trip to Osaka-Castle and Himeji-Castle. It was my first time visiting a Japanese Castle and I was awestruck by its magnificence and beauty. We even got to see and climb the inside of Himeji-Castle, read up on its history there and took a walk through its colourful gardens. Himeji-Castle was definitely the Highlight of my stay in Osaka, but the next day we would leave and take the Bus to Tottori city, a rather small city on the other Side of Japan.
Tottori-city is situated on the northern Coast of Japan and is most famous for its naturally forming Sand dunes right at the Beach. Being from Europe, I have only ever seen Sand in the Form of Beaches, so imagine my face as I saw Sand dunes for the first time in my life. They were much bigger and harder to climb than I imagined, even when the sand was a little more tough by slight rain that was happening that day. But as me and my girlfriend reached the top of the highest Dune in Tottori we looked around us and saw the beautiful Landscape, the Sea and the small city of Tottori in the Distance. To everyone reading this: If you ever get the chance to come to Tottori, do not hesitate to come here. And make sure to find the time to visit the many Museums here as well.
My last stop in this journey would be the most western City of Japan's main Island: Shimonoseki.
My stay here would be short but amazing non the less. We went to visit multiple Shrines in the City, went on top of Kaikyō Yume Tower, the biggest Tower in Shimonoseki, and went to a giant shopping mall where I would eat my first Steak in over 4 Months. Shimonoseki was too big to fully explore in only 3 days I decided to come back here as soon as I get the chance and continue my journey southwards. But I had to get back. So, I hopped in a Shinkansen and came back to Fukushima, which marked the end of my Christmas-journey.
After returning to Fukushima, my friend Tim and I decided to start trying out as many different restaurants in the city as we could. Every time we went out to eat we would walk around the city and randomly pick out a restaurant we saw. By doing this, we have found some awesome places where you can get amazing food for surprisingly cheap. It also gives us a chance to experience many different flavours and explore the culinary world of Japan.
Fukushima definitely has the best food compared to all the other places I have been to in Japan so far. Our favourite place is a small ramen-shop in a little hidden street in the middle of the City. Not only does it have the best ramen I have ever eaten, the owner is also very friendly. The owner is an old man working alone in the ramen-shop. He seemed to be really happy when he saw us enter the store. He tried talking English to us but we told him he could speak Japanese which made him even more excited. The Gyoza there is also very very good and cheap.
I can not count the number of restaurants we have tried so far in Fukushima, but all of them were good. There was not a single restaurant we did not enjoy going to and the food was not delicious.
Fukushima truly has the best food in all of Japan
Before I came to Japan and had to decide which university I would want to go to, I did some research into some of them. Fukushima University immediately caught my eye because of their big number of different sport clubs and sport classes. I always wanted to try out different Japanese sports such as Kendō or Kyūdō. Fukushima University would have been the perfect place for me to try out new sports, meet people and practice my Japanese, which is why I decided to apply here. Thankfully, I got accepted.
Now that I have spend one semester here, I can tell you that it really is magical here. Studying Japanese high upon a mountain and doing different kinds of sports with different kinds of people really is a wish come true for me. While I have not yet been able to do neither Kendō, nor Kyūdō, I will make sure to try it next semester. So far I have only participated in the Volleyball club and the Softball class. But both of them have been great. I have met many people and was able to talk and practice my Japanese there as well as play some fun sports. If you are interested in doing sport here in Japan, definitely come to Fukushima University. It is worth it!
