日本は興味深い国です。ドイツ人である私は、両国の社会にいくつかの共通点を見出すことができますが、日本にはユニークな特徴があります。日本では、世界のどこにもないような現代社会、歴史、伝統の融合を体験することができると思います。東京で高層ビルの間を歩いたり、印象的なショッピングストリートを散歩したりすると、突然、大きくて近代的なビルの中にある神社やお寺の前にたどり着くかもしれません。
しかし、大都市を離れれば、福島県のような場所を訪れることになるかもしれません。東京から新幹線で約1時間半の福島市では、のんびりとした時間が流れています。福島市は山にかこまれており、ハイキングをして市街地の素晴らしい眺めを楽しむことができます。桜が咲く春と、緑から黄色、そして赤へと紅葉する秋は特に魅力的です。11月に信夫山をハイキングしたとき、展望台で青空と紅葉に囲まれた山頂から福島市を一望することができました。そして最高なことに、この信夫山は私たち留学生が住む国際交流会館から自転車で10分ほどしかかかりません！
福島駅から電車で10分揺られた先には、福島大学があります。小高い山の上に位置し、自然に囲まれたキャンパスからは連なる山々が一望できます。大学は小さな規模ですが、学生も先生もとてもフレンドリーです。国際センターでは、学生の様々な問題を解決してくれます。また多くのクラブ活動にも参加できます。私は剣道部に入部して、とても楽しんでいます！
福島市には多くの郷土料理があります。郷土料理で一番有名なのは、やはり「円盤餃子」でしょう。餃子を円形に並べ、真ん中にも1～2個の餃子を置いて焼いたもので、皿いっぱいに盛られています。また、他の名物料理も見つけることができます。福島県の東側には、2011年3月11日の東日本大震災と原子力発電所事故によって一部または全部が被災したさまざまな町があります。私たちは浪江町の地元の祭りを訪れ、ボランティアとして祭りに参加する機会を得ました。そこで、太くてジューシーな焼きそばが特徴の浪江焼きそばを食べる機会がありました。美味しかったです！
一番好きなアクティビティは、自転車で町の南部まで中古品を買いものして行くこと、国際交流会館から3分のところにある銭湯に行くこと、そして国際センターが主催する様々なイベントや旅行に参加することです。最初の3ヶ月ですでにたくさんの旅行に出かけたので、すべての経験をこの短い文章に書き記すことはできません。だから、ぜひ福島に来て、この県と県民が提供するすべてのものを体験してください！

Japan is an intriguing country. As a German, I can find some similarities in both societies, but Japan has unique features. In my opinion, in Japan, you can experience a blend of modern society, history, and tradition like nowhere else in the world. While walking among skyscrapers and strolling along impressive shopping streets in Tokyo, you might suddenly find yourself in front of a shrine or a temple nestled among all those big and modern buildings.
But once you wander off from the big city you might find yourself into a place like Fukushima prefecture. Here in Fukushima, about a one-and-a-half-hour bullet train ride from Tokyo, life is slower and more relaxed, but that does not mean that it is not interesting. Fukushima City is surrounded by mountains, which you can hike and enjoy the fabulous view into the city. This is especially enchanting during spring, when cherry blossoms bloom and autumn, where all the leaves turn from green to yellow to red. When I was hiking Mt. Shinobu in November, I was able to enjoy great view over Fukushima City from there with a nice blue sky and colored leaves. And the best thing: Mt. Shinobu is only a ten-minute bike ride from our international student's dormitory!
A ten-minute train ride from Fukushima station leads to Fukushima University, which located on top of a small mountain. It is surrounded by nature and from campus you can have a splendid view on the western mountain range. It is a small university, but all students and teachers are very friendly. The international center helps us students with every problem and we can join many club activities. I joined the Kendo club and it has been a blast!
Fukushima City also has to offer a lot of regional and local cuisine. The best-known local dish might be Emban-gyoza. Dumplings that are arranged in a circle with one to two dumplings in the middle to fill a plate. But you can also find other specialties. East of Fukushima City lie many different towns that were partially or completely affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident on March 11 in 2011. We had the chance to visit a local festival in Namie Town and participate in the festivities as volunteers. There I had the chance to eat Namie Yakisoba, which feature are it's thick and juicy fried noodles. These were delicious!
I think the activities I like most are riding to southern part of town with my bike to go second-hand shopping, go to the hot spring, which is located 3-minutes from the dormitory and joining the various events and trips that are organized by the international center. In the first three months we already went on so many trips that I can't write down every experience in such a short text. So, please come to Fukushima and experience all the things this prefecture and its people have to offer!
