私は、九月末に福島に到着してから年末までの3か月間の留学生活についてまとめたいと思います。
まず簡単な背景として、福島は東北で、東京から新幹線で1時間半くらいの距離にあります。果物、特に桃やりんごが有名で、わらじ祭りでも知られています。もちろん、「福島」という名前を聞くと、2011年の地震と津波が思い出して、「ここは安全なのかな？」って心配する人もいるかもしれません。私は結構ラッキーで、来る前にもう福島のこと知ってたし、ここに旅行したことあって、そんなに身しらずじゃなかったです。ただ、大きな都市から少し離れていて、交通の便があまり良くなくて、どんなイベントや観光地があるのか分からなかったから、正直少し退屈なのではないかなって思っていました。しかし、その心配は全く間違いでした。
福島市に到着した初日は、荷物が多くてとても大変でしたが、私のバディだけじゃなく、他のバディの皆さんも手伝ってくれて、一緒に寮の4階にある私の部屋まで荷物を運んでくれました。部屋はそんなに広くないんですけど、とても住みやすく、ミニキッチンとバスルームが付いていて、共有しなくていいのがすごく好きです。家賃も安いです。また、以前住んでいた人が残していった物を使うこともでき、セシリアさんに聞けば案内してもらえます。コップやお皿、飾り、ドライヤーなど、必要なものはほとんど揃っているので、部屋の物を買いに行く前に確認したほうがいいと思います。寮の一つだけの欠点は、大学や駅から少し遠いことです。バスは遅れたり、電車に乗るには不便な時間だったりすることが多いので、私はほとんど毎日駅まで歩いています。それ以外はとても気に入っていて、特に1階のコミュニティルームではいっぱいイベントがあって、他の学生と知り合いやすい点がすごいだと思います。
大学は金谷川駅から10分くらいですが、ずっと上いかないといけないのでちょっと大変です。キャンパスは広くて、すべての建物が同じ場所でいて、学食もあります。食事は美味しくて安く、私は大好きです。大学は母国の大学より小さいですが、それでも参加できるサークルがたくさんがあって、驚きました。授業も面白いものが多く、来学期には新しい従業やってみるかもしれない。日本語の授業はN2レベルで、自分にはまだ難しいと思っていたけど、受けられたことに驚きました。最初は大変で、毎週宿題も多かったんですけど、JLPTの準備ですごく助かると思いますので、頑張っています。また、会話の授業では日本人学生がサポートに来てくれて、新しい友達もできて、すごくいい経験になっています。
バディや他の留学生と一緒に、たくさん旅行とかエベントに行くことをできていることも、とても嬉しいです。カラオケに行ったり、郡山にとか旅行したり、お祭りに参加したり、一緒にアルバイトをしたりしています。こんなに短い期間で、ここまで強いコミュニティができるとは思っていませんでした。誰かが何かを提案すると、必ず誰かが参加してくれます。クリスマスも一緒にお祝いし、料理をしてプレゼントを交換しました。来年は日光に行く予定もあり、これからもたくさんの思い出を作ると思います。
この3か月間で特に楽しかったのは、飯坂喧嘩祭りです。日本のお祭りに参加するのは初めてで、御神輿を担いだり、その後に温泉に入ったりして、すごく楽しみにしてました。地元の人と同じ格好をして参加し、食事も用意していただき、本当に楽しかったです。温泉もとても美しく、特に露天風呂がすてきで、ぜひまた戻りたいと思いました。
一週間で七回しか授業がないから、自由な時間もあり、その時間を使って日本の中でいっぱい旅行しました。大阪のような遠い場所にも行けましたし、福島県内についてももっと知ることができました。この3か月で、二本松、須賀川、狐村、郡山、仙台など、たくさんの場所に旅行しました。今後もっと多くの場所に旅行したり、イベントやお祭りに参加するのが楽しみです。また、福島の歴史、特に2011年の震災についても学ぶ機会がありました。大熊町や浪江町を見に行けて、その経験経験は決して忘れられません。大熊町と浪江町を見て、まだ事件の残りが感じるんですけど、少しずつ生き返るのを見て感動しました。
この数か月でいくつかのお土産ももらえました。最初は、自分で絵付けしたこけし人形です。りんご狩り、こけし絵付け、茶道体験の日にもらったもので、国際センターが企画してくれました。その日の思い出とともに、このこけしは一生大切にします。福島のりんごは、人生で食べた中で一番美味しかったかもしれません。茶道を実際に見るのも初めてで、浴衣を着る体験もできました。これを経験できた家もとても特別で、その話を聞いて日本の文化についてたくさん学ぶことができました。
三春町にも旅行できて、三春駒の絵付け体験をしました。とても楽しくて、結果も大好きです。いつか桜の季節に、また三春に旅行したいと思っています。
もう一つの大きな思い出は、宮城県の狐村です。日本語会話の授業でボランティアをしてくれている優しい先輩が近くに住んでいて、案内してくれることになりました。12月に一緒に旅行した日はとても寒かったですが、雪景色が美しく、狐を抱っこすることもできました。ぜひみんなにおすすめしたい場所です。
2026年も勉強もアルバイトも頑張っていきたいと思います。これまで本当にありがとうございました。これからの留学生活も、とても楽しみにしています。
I will summarize my experience studying in Fukushima from the day I arrived late September until the new year, so my first three months.
As a short background information I wanted to add, that Fukushima is 1.5 hours by shinkansen from Tokyo, in the Tohoku region. It is famous for it's fruits, especially peach and apple, and also for their waraji festival. Of course if somebody hears the name „Fukushima', they will think about the disaster from 2011 and maybe ask, is it safe to be here? Before coming here, I was lucky that I already knew about Fukushima and traveled here, so it was not that unfamiliar for me. I was worried about the location just because it is quite far from the bigger cities, the transportation is not the best and I didn't know what interesting places and events will be held here, so I was afraid it will be boring. But I was very wrong!
When I first arrived at the city, I had a hard time with my luggages, but luckily not just my buddy, but other buddies also helped me carry my luggage to the dorm and up to the 4th floor, which is where my room is located. The room was small but very liveable, with my own small kitchen and bathroom, so we don't have to share, which I find super. It's also cheap. You can also use the things others left here earlier, you just have to ask Cecilia and she will show them to you. You can find anything there, cups, plates, decorations, hair dryers etc. So I recommend you to check this before going shopping for your room. The only negativum about the dorm for me is that it is quite far from the university or from the station, and the busses are either late or are coming at an inconvenient time to catch the train at the station, so I usually have to walk to the station and back every day. Other than this, I really like it here, especially that many programs are held in our community room on the first floor, which makes it easy to socialize with other students.
The university is a 10 minute walk from Kanayagawa station, which would not be a problem, but it is quite a hike upwards. The campus is big and everything is in one place, and there is a cafeteria, where the food is delicious and also cheap, I really like it. I was surprised to see, that despite this university being smaller than my home university, it still has many clubs you can join to. There are also many interesting classes, and I hope maybe I can find something new the next semester to try. My japanese classes are N2 level, which I was surprised I could do, because I thought I'm not skilled enough for that yet. At first it was hard, and there is many homework every week, but I feel like it will help me prepare for the JLPT exam, so I will give my best. My teacher also invited japanese students to help us out in our conversation classes, and I find it super, and we could also make new friends this way.
I'm also really happy that we, with buddys and the other exchange students, plan things to do together. We went to karaoke together, visited Koriyama, festivals, are working together part time etc. I never thought we can build a community like this in such a short time. If somebody wants to do something, somebody is definitely on board. We also celebrated christmas together, where we cooked and gave presents to each other. Sometime next year we are also planning to go to Nikko together, and I'm sure many other things are also coming while we are here.
One of the highlights in this 3 months was the Iizaka Kenka Matsuri for me. It was my first time experiencing and also taking part in a japanese festival, and I was very excited to carry a mikoshi and try an onsen after. I had so much fun at the festival, we got to dress like the locals and also got food and dinner after the program. The onsen was beautiful, I have never been in such a nice onsen before. Especially the outside pool was beautiful, I really liked that and would like to visit again sometime.
Since I only have 7 lessons a week, I have a bit free time for myself, which I used to travel to different places in Japan. I got the chance to travel to far places such as Osaka, but could also get to know Fukushima Prefecture better. In this 3 months, I saw a lot of cities and places, such as Nihonmatsu, Sukagawa, Fox Village, Koriyama, Sendai and more. I'm excited to travel to even more places and take part in more events and festivals. I also got the chance to get to know more about Fukushima's history, especially about the 2011 disaster. We traveled to Okuma and Namie, which I will never forget about. These places were full of hope, but you could also see what the disaster did to these places and it was heartwarming to see them slowly coming back to life.
I also received some souveniers in these past months, the first one being a kokeshi doll I could paint myself. I received it when we were doing the apple picking, kokeshi doll painting and tea ceremony day, which was organised by the international center and everybody was really excited about it. I will forever cherish this doll and the memories of that day. The apple of Fukushima may be the best I ate in my entire life. Also this was my first time seeing a tea ceremony myself, and dressed in yukata. The house where we could observe this, was also very special and I learned a lot about japanese culture by hearing the stories about it.
We also visited Miharu city, where I got the chance to paint my own Miharugoma, which was also a very exciting activity and I love how it turned out. I plan to go back to Miharu to see the sakura.
Another highlight for me was definitely the fox village in Miyagi Prefecture. While studying here, I got to know a very kind senpai, who is volunteering at our japanese speaking lessons, and she offered to guide us, since she is living nearby. I was really happy and took her offer, so we met in December to see the foxes. It was a very cold, but beautiful snowy day and we even got the chance to hug the foxes. I can recommend everybody to go and check it out.
I will continue to study and will give my best in 2026 too. Thank you for everything until now and I'm excited about what is to come!
